Business Model#

What the company does and how it earns its money; written AI-editorially, exclusively from the company's original reports, without any assessment of our own.

ASML Holding NV designs and manufactures lithography systems used by semiconductor manufacturers to print circuit patterns onto silicon wafers, serving as an essential step in chip production. The company is the world's sole producer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography systems and a leading manufacturer of deep ultraviolet (DUV) immersion and dry systems, with customers spanning the global logic and memory chip industry. Revenue is generated through system sales – primarily EXE (high-NA EUV), NXE (EUV), and NXT (DUV immersion) platforms – and through the Installed Base Management segment, which provides maintenance, field upgrades, and support services for ASML's growing installed base of systems in customer fabs worldwide. Service and field option sales constitute an increasing share of total revenue, driven by the expanding installed base and customer demand for productivity and yield improvements.

Revenue trend
Guidance
For FY2030, the company guides Revenue to €44 billion to €60 billion; Gross margin (GAAP) to 56% to 60% (initiated); Revenue opportunity to €44 billion to €60 billion (initiated). 18.
Profitability
Q2 2026 operating income was €3,456.1 million and net income was €2,918.0 million 123. Operating cash flow for Q2 was €1,703.0 million, with capital expenditure of €299.4 million, resulting in free cash flow of €1,403.6 million 123. H1 2026 gross profit margin decreased to 50.9% from 53.3% in H1 2025, primarily due to increased amortization of capitalized development expenditures 21.
Leverage
At June 28, 2026, cash and cash equivalents stood at €6,671.9 million, with a net cash position of €4,687.5 million (negative net debt of -€4,687.5 million) 123. Cash decreased from €12.9 billion at December 31, 2025 to €6.7 billion at June 28, 2026 21. The net cash position reflects ASML's continued balance sheet strength despite capital returns to shareholders.
Recurring
Net service and field option sales grew 28.1% to €5.2 billion in H1 2026 from €4.1 billion in H1 2025, reflecting growth of the installed base and demand for productivity upgrades 21. Service revenue represented a meaningful and expanding share of total H1 2026 net sales of €18.1 billion, providing a recurring revenue stream tied to ASML's growing base of systems in customer fabs 21. The acceleration in service sales outpaced overall revenue growth of 17.2%, indicating increasing aftermarket intensity per installed system 21.
Management view
ASML plans to expand NXE EUV capacity by approximately 30% to around 65 systems for 2027 and is investigating a further 30% capacity increase for 2028 21. A comparable 30% expansion of NXT immersion capacity to around 130 systems is planned for 2027, with a further 30% under investigation for 2028 21. Marco J.A. Pieters was appointed Chief Technology Officer to the Board of Management on April 22, 2026 21.
Change
H1 2026 R&D costs increased to €2.5 billion from €1.8 billion in H1 2025, driven by continued investments in the product and technology roadmap as well as Technology transformation costs 21. The increase in R&D spending and higher amortization of capitalized development expenditures were the primary drivers of the gross profit margin decline to 50.9% from 53.3% in the prior-year period 21.
Risks (current)
ASML's operations are highly dependent on a limited number of critical suppliers and on the availability of single-source key components and critical supplies, creating concentration risk in the supply chain 21. Changes in export regulations could affect ASML's ability to obtain licenses and serve customers in certain geographies 21. Additional risks include semiconductor industry cyclicality, dependence on continued AI-driven semiconductor investment, the need to attract and retain qualified employees to manage organizational growth, and intense competition in the semiconductor equipment sector 21.
New this reporting period
ASML disclosed plans for multiple new platform introductions, including the NXE:3800F and NXE:4200G EUV lithography systems as part of the ongoing EUV product roadmap 21. Additional platforms under development include the XT:260 for 3D integration solutions and the YS 550 next-generation optical metrology system 21. The eScan 2200 multibeam inspection system is also planned as a further expansion of ASML's process control portfolio 21.

2026-Q2 · Apr – Jun 2026

„Our second-quarter total net sales were €9.3 billion and gross margin came in at 54.0%, both above guidance, driven primarily by higher than expected Installed Base Management sales. Ongoing AI-related investments and continued progress in AI technologies are driving demand for advanced Logic and Memory chips, further strengthening the semiconductor industry's growth outlook. Our customers, in turn, continue to accelerate their capacity expansion plans. This is translating into customer commitments across our product portfolio, providing ASML with increased visibility into longer-term demand. Our order intake remained extremely strong in the first half of the year. Based on this momentum, we are planning to add 30% to our 2026 low NA EUV capacity of around 65 for 2027, and we are investigating to increase capacity with another 30% for 2028. Similarly, we plan to add 30% to our 2026 DUV immersion capacity of around 130 for 2027, and we are investigating to increase capacity with another 30% in 2028. In addition, we are continuing to significantly expand our upgrade portfolio. We expect third-quarter 2026 total net sales between €11.0 billion and €12.0 billion, with a gross margin between 55% and 57%. We expect R&D costs of around €1.2 billion and SG&A costs of around €0.4 billion. Given the business dynamics discussed above, we now expect total net sales for 2026 to be between €43 billion and €45 billion, with a gross margin between 54% and 56%. At our next Capital Markets Day, which will be held on June 10, 2027, we will update our longer-term views to reflect the market and technology dynamics since our last Capital Markets Day.“ – Christophe Fouquet, President and Chief Executive Officer 23

Balance Sheet & Cash Flow (€m)#

Point-in-time balance sheet items (e.g. cash, financial debt) and cash flow items (operating cash flow, investments/capex) per fiscal year, half-year and quarter. Balance sheet values are as of the period end, flow items cover the period. Derived values are marked and are calculated, for example, as: net debt = financial debt − cash; free cash flow = operating cash flow − capex; the click popover shows formula and inputs. All values are extracted automatically from the filings; errors are possible; please verify decision-relevant figures yourself by clicking through to the linked original.

Revenue by Type (as of 2026-Q2 · EURm · 46/46)#

Revenue split by segment or product type, exactly as the company itself reports it. The basis is stated next to each value (3, 6 or 12 months); segment totals can deviate from group revenue (reconciliation/consolidation items). If the company changes its segment structure, older structures are kept in the expandable part. Rows in grey are no longer reported separately by the company; they show the last available figures and are never extrapolated.

Reported KPIs (as disclosed) (273)#

Figures the company discloses itself in addition to the standard financials; order intake, recurring revenue, user or unit counts, adjusted measures. These “story KPIs” usually slip through standard databases; here they are collected as reported, with no calculation of our own. Important: the definition comes from the company itself and can differ from firm to firm; period and source are stated next to every value.

Company-specific KPIs verbatim from the filings (English, as disclosed; not normalised). Balance-sheet and boilerplate items filtered.

Guidance Tracking (latest per metric/period · 18/18)#

All management forecasts (guidance) and their later outcome. Types: fiscal-year targets as well as quarterly/half-year targets; per metric and period the most recent statement applies, older versions can be expanded. The status is checked automatically against the actuals reported later: open (period still running), met, beaten, missed. For ranges (“X to Y”) reaching the range counts. Logged neutrally, no estimate of our own, no assessment.
